KACHLIARSKA DIELŇA JOZEFA BENČA V NOVEJ BANI

The tile stove workshop of Jozef Benč in Nová Baňa.
At the beginning of the 20th century a relatively large amount of producers of tile stoves worked in Nová Baňa. The best known was Benč Jozef (1879-1940) and his younger son, also Jozef (1912-1978).
They were specialized in production of stoves and cookers, but they produced various pottery, decorative sculptures for gardens or ceramic medallions on tombstones as well. One of their other production activities was the glazing and marbling of clay pipes.
On order they varnished pipes which were made in workshops of K. Zachar from Banská Štiavnica and Max Weiss from Nitra.
During the research of Jozef Benč´s workplace we found a lot of clay pipes, semifinished products or faulty pieces.
In the collections of the Pohronske Museum we taken together 36 pieces of clay pipes. Only 4 of them can be confidently attributed to the workshop of K. Zachar. Most of the collected pipes were made by M. Weiss. We recognize six basic types of clay pipes from the workshop of J. Benč.
